Who are you to tell me how to breathe Who are you to tell me how to be It’s a road I’ll only know If you let me walk it alone And I will in time And it all takes time Today I finally found my name From a summer read and a baseball game It’s a road I’ll only know If you let me walk it alone And I will in time And it all takes time

You must have been head of your class Because all you talk about are dreams Who am I to shatter the glass When you work so hard to keep things clean Got a plan, got a plan, got a plan And you keep it tucked away real good How the streetlights warm my bed Just like you always said you would Miles and miles and it fades into nothing Years and years and it's got to add up to something Shake a hand, shake a hand, shake a hand In the end, they'll get you in the face Take a picture, a grin and a grin Forget all about this place Miles and miles and it fades into nothing Years and years and it's got to add up to something Miles and miles and it fades into nothing Years and years and it's got to add up to something

Complex 03:05
Wait a minute Could have sworn the weather called for rain Is it out there Making music on my window pane I know you Found you waiting at the bottom of my steps And I know you Only stayed cuz you thought you had nothing left And the stories said that nothing would change But I don't believe all that Here we are at the start of the game Just trying to make the rent Can I help you Pouring out my heartache over tea In a hallway Where there's only room enough for me Did you see that Smoke and mirrors and an aviator ghost I know you You like to say that they talk to you the most And the stories said that nothing would change But I don't believe all that Here we are at the start of the game Just trying to make the rent And the stories said that nothing would change But I don't believe all that Here we are at the start of the game Just trying to make the rent

A table in the corner A glass of Premier Cru A waiter takes my order But all I want is you But I don't see you on the menu Or I'd order two of you But I don't see you on the menu And I'll I really want is you We'd come here together Share a chocolate fondue But now you're gone forever So I'll just have some Danish Blue But I don't see you on the menu Or I'd order two of you But I don't see you on the menu And I'll I really want is you But I don't see you on the menu Or I'd order two of you But I don't see you on the menu And I'll I really want is you

Damn The Man 03:14
Working cuz they told me to I've never been one to shirk responsibility If I could do it all again I would The calendar says January Oh my God I'm stuck inside A maze and I'm the mouse just looking for a place to settle down Punch that clock, I'm dead But I'll be here tomorrow, bet your ass I can't recall the last full night Of sleep I got but that's OK I'm changing our world, yeah At least that's what they told me, though And I'll be all used up Before I can say "mental breakdown" I'm a bird inside a cage Just let me out like they don't tell you to Punch that clock, I'm dead But I'll be here tomorrow, bet your ass All my work clothes washed and pressed I put on that ol' makeup, yeah I'm put together, settled down A 401K attitude My guitar's collecting dust Forgotten to a life of 9 to 5 A health care promise And a life insurance plan to choose Punch that clock, I'm dead But I'll be here tomorrow, bet your ass Punch that clock, I'm dead But I'll be here tomorrow, bet your ass Punch that clock, I'm dead But I'll be here tomorrow, bet your ass Punch that clock, I'm dead But I'll be here tomorrow, bet your ass

First 03:20
I knew that you were coming by the mood of the day and the dream I had the night before I’m told that I was made for this, connected to something, but I’m shaking and I’m not so sure You were lying, looking, not a care in the world and I sweated through my favorite shirt Everything was quiet, sun was shining, I felt you, yeah, this is what they mean by hurt Love and light Take me away from here It’s you and I And the world’s gonna disappear Minutes turn to hours when the clock is unwound, but I’d stay here for the rest of my days Yeah, I’ll go through a Hell and a ring of fire just to have a look at your sweet face Love and light Take me away from here It’s you and I And the world’s gonna disappear

Speed It Up 03:00
You said wait for the weekend It’ll be a nuisance To stick yourself with needles Why do you always do that And I have no good reason But to feel the blood come Could it be a ghost here Or am I chasing my own shadow And let’s Take It slow Or just let it go But I’ve always been one to want to speed it up, yeah Sky is dropping ice cubes Covering my front steps I can’t step outside Without a damn production Where’s my fire burning I can’t feel my fingers A dream of my desire And I just can’t forget you And let’s Take It slow Or just let it go But I’ve always been one to want to speed it up, yeah I know what you’re doing Even if you don’t know My heart of tired And I can’t take the waiting Today I found a reason Tomorrow there’ll be nothing You said that you loved me Does that amount to nothing And let’s Take It slow Or just let it go But I’ve always been one to want to speed it up, yeah

Break 02:44
Well rip my heart in a million pieces and I’m too young to know What rides the tail of a midlife crisis and But yeah here we go Oh shower me with a hurricane and All the love you’ve got I’ve a habit of soaking it up, yeah Long as I don’t get caught Oh the morning comes like it always does With a knife behind the back And the night before plays a mellow tune, yeah And I’m back to black And if you’re looking for reason You won’t find it here And I’ve a habit of soaking it up, yeah Long as I can disappear Well rip my heart in a million pieces and I’m too young to know What rides the tail of a midlife crisis and But yeah here we go Oh shower me with a hurricane and All the love you’ve got I’ve a habit of soaking it up, yeah Long as I don’t get caught I’ve a habit of soaking it up, yeah Long as I don’t get caught I’ve a habit of soaking it up, yeah Long as I don’t get caught

You were waiting in the corner Of the room not fully dressed And my heart skipped back to days I never knew you All the screaming, all the throwing In our house, a constant mess But I can't imagine doing this without you Gimme just a day, I'll be alright We'll forget all about last night It's gonna be forever you and I And we know it How you're changing what you're doing It's a lovely thing to see And I'll be there every day to take your picture There's a moment in the morning In the still of new sunlight In a hundred years I'll beg to do this over Gimme just a day, I'll be alright We'll forget all about last night It's gonna be forever you and I And we know it Gimme just a day, I'll be alright We'll forget all about last night It's gonna be forever you and I And we know it

Pretender 03:35
I’ve always been told I’m a great pretender Nowhere to go and too much steam But I’m just waiting for my ever-after In spite of myself and everything Oh my God, what a waste of summer Everything’s gone to shit they say But I don’t mind the taste of winter Or June bugs coming around in May Every love song has a story Every sad song has one too I’m just looking for my ever-after So I won’t waste any time on you But what if I want to What if I want to What if I want to What if I want to Forty summers and the sweat to show it Bathing suits hung out to dry Where you doing with that face for pictures Another love but you don’t know why But what if you want to What if you want to What if you want to What if you want to
12.
God damn if I don't know The last thing you said Cuz I had a mind to write you a song instead I'll dream another dream On waking I'll just Sigh another sigh And it's gone gone gone Like it never was I tried to stay awake But the night came out on top And it plays like a matinee I'm in the back row sleeping it off So 'll dream another dream On waking I'll just Sigh another sigh And it's gone gone gone Like it never was I can't forget the line I baited with my breath And it's all a waiting game So I think I'll stay in bed And dream another dream On waking I'll just Sigh another sigh And it's gone gone gone Like I never Dream another dream On waking I'll just Sigh another sigh And it's gone gone gone Like it never Gone gone gone Like it never was

If I could check a million boxes Then I would win a million prizes And I could see myself in pictures If I could let it go But I’m not ready For the curtain to come down If I could save a little for you Then I would promise adore you The day breaks and everything is new now But I won’t let it go And I’m not ready For the curtain to come down And oh, the fever breaks And oh, the thunderstorm awakes But I can’t let it go I’m far from home and I have nothing left If I could put a voice to sorrow I’d scream and shout until tomorrow Oh my, dreams that never happened But I’m still checking all boxes And I’m not ready For the curtain to come down Waiting for that curtain to come down

Father Time 03:18
Oh, Father Time You're always off my side The day's a bitter wind Oh, Father Time I know you can see me cry My tears will have no end You tell me that I'll want to go back home No one ever wants to be alone Fortunate souls are gonna form to the easy whim Oh, Father Time I know you know me well The summer's come and gone Oh, Father Time The winter sun forgets herself As we're apt to do A girl can only take so much in stride Tell me when to fall or toe the line I run my hands through the sand of time But I forget You tell me that I'll want to go back home No one ever wants to be alone Fortunate souls are gonna form to the easy whim You tell me that I'll want to go back home No one ever wants to be alone Fortunate souls are gonna form to the easy whim

Bury me in a shallow grave With leather boots on my feet For if from Death's door I escape You'll hear me kickin' in your sleep Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Bury me in weather fair With a hammer in my hand For if from the Reaper's scythe I am spared, You'll hear me knockin' in your head Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Bury me in a box of pine With a hatchet in my hand For if I find it's not my time I'll save myself from the damned Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Bury me in my Sunday clothes With the Good Book at my side For if I rise from the deadly throes I’ll join in worship by-and-by Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out! Let me out!

about

This album was written and recorded during the month of February 2021 as part of the annual February Album Writing Month challenge, asking participants to write 14 songs in 28 days. Rules can be found at fawm.org/help/.

The album A Million Boxes is inspired by personal life events and plays in chronological order. All of these tracks were recorded in one take using my phone and the DolbyOn app. Most songs were written in under an hour.

I hesitated posting this as an album, among our other works, which were labors of love over hours, lots of money, and via actual recording equipment. I mean, this is just a bunch of songs recorded on my phone. The sound quality is horrendous. However, the writing block has been so deep and so continuous, and I'm so proud that I've gone from writing nothing to writing so many songs in the shortest month of the year is something that I want to put with our other work as a callback to how we started: writing all the time, having so much fun, recording in our bathroom with minimal equipment.

Not only that, but there's a lot of heart in these songs. Our lives as musicians now are wrapped up in a cute little blanket of little kids and family and work and playgrounds and picking up messes. But we are still musicians. I am still a musician. And this is proof. To myself, if to no one else.

Thanks if you've taken the time to check this out and to listen to everything. Love, love, love.
